Biography
Everything heads toward destruction, and nothing lasts forever but impact. The impact writer Lamia Nouira Boukil is writing about that immortal herb that, though it may not change the world, undoubtedly carries its voice and conscience.
With this firm belief, Lamia Nouira Boukil wrote three collections of short stories, the three of which are characterized by realism, and through which she proved that the writer is nothing but a man of his time, of the society he belongs to locally, and of the world he belongs to universally.
The writer says, “I picked out my many stories with their events, characters, and settings from the road and mundane public spaces, from those around me; women, men or children, simple and worn out, from those who resemble me and share with my concern and disappointment, worry and dream, hope and longing, those who struggle with the necessities of life, along with the heaviness of social, economic and political changes, and despite all that hardship, they are driven by the hope for a better tomorrow, and the longing for a more beautiful world where there is justice and enough space for joy and dream.”
Besides shedding light on Man, the writer’s stories focus on the animal because Man’s ancient partner has accompanied him since the beginning of creation. There is also a celebration of places and times, a nostalgic journey that we all can relate to. Within that focus and attention, ideas emerge with their human, philosophical, and existential dimensions. References to the arts also appear because of their relation with human issues, beauty, and their profound impact on the soul that tastes them.
The writer’s stories are not political. Still, they are not isolated from politics and its vicissitudes that cast a shadow on all aspects of life and people’s souls or from the world that has become a palm-sized village thanks to technology and globalization. The closeness and familiarity between individuals and people are as powerful as alienation and estrangement. For this very reason, the writer expressed herself, saying, “Development is beyond imagination, and there is no guarantee for the nobility of consciences, and Man today, instead of achieving happiness, his fears and alienation increased, which makes me worried and scared as a being and as a writer. For this reason, I gave some of my stories and tales, apart from their extreme realism, a dose of imagination, suspense, wit, strangeness, and unreality, and gave their local roots branches that will stretch their necks to touch the wider world.”
In this last regard, she said, “Yes, after the first reading, my stories may seem to be local affairs, but a deep and insightful one will soon reveal that they are filled with the spirit of universality and belonging to Man wherever he is, and carry his voice, his concern, and his dream relentlessly. That’s why I will always and forever dedicate all my writings to him.”
